How to surf like a pro
Surfing Fitness - A blog by Nick Shaw
How to get more air, nail better tricks and stay out on the water for longer! ...

As a keen surfer who doesn't get to the water as much as you'd like to, there's
probably a good chance you're being held back by some common problems.

For starters, perhaps you're like many of us surfers who are...

Unable to surf as long as you like because of fatigue?

There's nothing worse than having to call it a day way earlier than you wanted to
because your body refuses to play. Especially when you've waited all week (or
longer) to get some waves.

Or perhaps you are...

Tied down to "Newbie" tricks?

When you're lacking in strength it's very hard to break out any new tricks...no matter how confident you are in doing them.

At the end of the day, when your muscles don't allow you to get the air you need, then those new tricks simply won't develop. It's frustrating and it can leave you feeling stuck and bored of the same routines and tricks you're limited to.

And then there's your style...

There's one thing not being able to pull off new tricks, but when your style is lacking because of poor board control and balance then you know something needs to be fixed, right?

Or perhaps you're like me and you are...

Always getting injured from wipeouts

Sure, we all have wipeouts and not even the pros can avoid the occasional nose dive. But when it happens relentlessly each time you hit the water, there's got to be a reason behind it...right?

Well, there is a very good reason and you probably know it already. It's all down
to your fitness. In surfing fitness counts. Period.

I'm not sure about you, but because I can only surf a few times per month it means that in the past, I just couldn't keep up.

I always want to be able to stay out for longer but previously I couldn't because of fitness and pains.

I couldn't even paddle through broken waves and my legs locked up after a couple of hours...meaning I always lost balance and couldn't move from front to back on my longboard.

And that's not all, because after each session it always felt like I'd been hit by a truck (those back pains were not fun).

And here's what held me back...

As surfing has become more popular over the years, more and more authors, websites and personal trainers have come out of the woodwork to teach their fitness regimes to surfers.

Some of their theories and routines are pretty effective in some cases, but for me personally I found that there was always a set of common problems with these types of fitness resources, such as...

1. Many fitness guides are not specific enough to help surfers (Because they don't focus on core muscle groups and they Definitely don't specifically focus on fitness for surfers!)

This is probably the most common problem with fitness guides aimed at surfers. As we know, fitness and strength are paramount to our ability to do better tricks, get more air and stay out for longer...but learning how to become a body builder or professional runner isn't enough to hone our surfing abilities.

We need core training, with focused muscle group strengthening, not just endurance training or cardio routines. In other words, we need a certain mix of specialized training routines designed for surfing.

2. Training at the gym won't help you develop the right level of fitness

Whether you follow a certain program which focuses on gym bases routines, or
you decide to become a gym rat with no specific plan, then gyms alone won't help to develop the right physical abilities alone.

Again, specific routines, nutrition and resistance training is required and pumping iron at the gym is not going to help with your balance, style or stamina when it comes to surf time.

3. A lot of Resources contain generic fitness info that is either painfully obvious or that is more like a body building guide

I'll save you a few hundred dollars and several months of time wasting by telling you this up front...there are tons of books on surfing techniques and even a few that "seem" to specialize in surfing fitness, which are totally useless.

Sorry to sound harsh to the authors, but most of them are not even experienced surfers...more like gym fanatics or personal trainers giving generic advice. Furthermore, following basic and unprofessional advice found freely online can often do more damage than good anyway.

And because I've since discovered a system which does focus on certain routines and training techniques that are tailored specifically for surfers, then it's my duty to inform you that there's also a sea of useless and generic advice out there that won't really make much difference to your surfing abilities.

So what will help your surfing abilities?

A good friend of mine referred me to a guide which is fairly new to all of us, and is tailored to surfers specifically. And guess what - it's written by an actual surfer!

In the guide, you'll get 3 x core programs that cover specific workouts and training routines which can seriously enhance your surfing ability, allowing you to...

  • Surf harder and longer without fatigue
  • Land bigger and better tricks
  • Surf with more style
  • Increase your board control
  • Improve your balance
  • Get more air
  • Decrease the chance of injuries
  • Rehabilitate previous injuries
  • Recover quicker from sessions

It' called Total Surfing Fitness and it was created by fellow surfer, Clayton Beatty.

More on Clayton in just a second, but first here's a little more background on the
actual program...

What makes Clayton Beatty's Total Surfing Fitness product different?

Unlike other guides, the exercises and programs found inside Total Surfing Fitness focus specifically on the critical fitness components needed for performance surfing.

This means that you don't waste time trying to "bulk" up, or waste energy doing obvious everyday exercises that won't directly improve your physical ability in the
water, on your board.

By following this sort of specific advice, you will notice your ability to stay out for longer, try out (and perfect) new tricks, get more air and improve your overall health and physical appearance as a bonus.

It's also cheaper than a single gym membership and doesn't require you to go out and but tons of wacky exercise equipment (everything inside the guide can be done with really basic things like dumbbells, medicine ball and your own body weight).

The sort of fitness which can drastically improve your surfing ability can only be achieved through functional training, which is what can be found inside Total Surfing Fitness.

Pro surfers like Mick Fanning know this, and that's how Mick manages to recover from tearing his hamstring off the bone several years ago, with doctors not sure if he could eve surf again, to coming back and winning the World Title.

Check out the video of Mick right here >>>

Who's behind it?

Clayton Beatty is a Certified Personal Trainer with a Bachelors Degree in Exercise & Health Science. Clearly from reading his material and seeing his background, you can tell that he knows fitness inside out.

And because he specializes in functional fitness training programs for extreme sport athletes - such as www.ExtremeSportFitness.com and of course www.TotalSurfingFitness.com, you know that the advice is specialized for sports
people in mind.

Clayton's passion for surfing is clear and shines through in his material. He uses his expertise to help other surfers perform at their peak, with specialized programs that leave out the fluff and filler that other traditional "me too" guides and books contain.

Total Surfing Fitness was created so surfers like you and I can have access to a
fitness program that will not only help reduce the risk of injury, increase your health, make you look ripped, but also actually help you become a more insane
surfer.

Think of it like a complete strength & conditioning guide to help get your body in
the best physical condition to hit the surf.

A word of warning though...

Some of the training can get a little heavy, after you're further into the program so you do need to take things at your own pace. If you're not into physical fitness and just want the glory of being a good surfer then this program isn't for you.

Also, don't expect results overnight. This is a serious program for committed surfers. Whilst you don't need lots of equipment or time to complete the program, you will need a certain level of dedication and patience.

The results of course, are well worth it if you want to take your surfing to the next level.

Although the main guide seems lacking on stretching routines (which I believe are essential for a good session), there's a handy little bonus guide which covers a lot of stretching routines which is really helpful.

Another thing that seemed lacking was the nutritional side of fitness which goes hand in hand with the physical side of fitness training.

So again, it's nice to see that you get an additional guide on nutrition too, which covers over 27 specific metabolism-boosting secrets that you can use to strip off your stubborn body fat faster and easier.

All being said, with a 56 day money back guarantee you'll have plenty of time to see whether this is right for you.

Personally, I'd recommend this to all of my surfing buddies and if you're serious about improving your enjoyment, length of each session and ability to perform jaw dropping tricks, then Total Surfing Fitness is definitely the way forward.

What should you do now?
